Dror Ben Ami
Born 1956, Israel
Lives and works in Tel Aviv
Ben Ami works almost exclusively on paper. Generally large-scale, his “paintings” are the result of his manipulation of various inks and charcoals that he uses to explore the depth and vulnerability of the materials. The results are often punctured, perforated, sanded down, erased and yet layered works.
The artist’s classical training as a painter at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, gives him the foundation for academic painting and drawing. Because of his choice of materials, Ben Ami’s works are an inherent scrutiny of the concept of blackness. While necessarily fragile, his works are profoundly powerful, dealing with an examination of the universe, life, and death in an existential query. Ben Ami’s works are a paradoxically dark and sometimes morbidly aesthetic probe into the consciousness of our own existence.
